The Careers Team at Harrow provides guidance on subject choices and career options, as well as work experience, so that boys can enter the world of work well-equipped.
Research and preparation start from the Shell year. All boys are encouraged to use New Kudos, an online careers advice and information resource, and to attend our programme of career lectures. These talks raise boys’ awareness of specific careers and the typical qualities that recruiting organisations look for. Speakers have included headhunters, lawyers, medical consultants, MPs, members of the civil service, investment bankers, members of Special Forces, experts in graduate recruitment, advertising executives, surgeons and engineers. We also hold a Careers Convention in January, at which over 70 expert advisors offer advice. These individuals hail from traditional industries such as accountancy and law to the more modern, including visual effects and web design.
Fifth Formers benefit from our association with Cambridge Occupational Analysts, who provide online psychometric testing, as well as membership of the Independent Schools Careers Organisation (ISCO). As they consider their A-level and degree choices, they are guided to keep their options open and set them up for later success.
Boys in the Fifth and Sixth Forms are encouraged to carry out annual work experience, making a vital contribution to their university personal statements. From among our thriving network, many Old Harrovians are willing to offer placements, as well as mentoring. Our alumni organisation, the Harrow Association (HA), facilitates introductions between current and formers boys, and plays a key role in our careers advice. Once a boy leaves Harrow, he may continue to access assistance via the HA. From an annual careers guidance seminar for undergraduates through to personal introductions, networking evenings and over 20 clubs for professions including law, medicine, finance, property, entrepreneurship and investing, career support extends far beyond a boy's time at Harrow.
