john batting, FFA - Chairman

An Old Harrovian and former Harrow parent, Mr Batting (The Park 1972²) is a pension scheme actuary and the Chief Executive Officer of Punter Southall Limited. He read Mathematics at Cambridge University prior to his actuarial training and professional studies with Sedgwick Employee Benefits in 1980, and set up BGJ & Co Limited in 1993, which merged with Punter Southall in 2002. Mr Batting became CEO of Punter Southall in 2004, and is also the Chairman or a Director of other companies within the Punter Southall Group. He has been a Governor since 2006, was appointed Deputy Chairman in 2013 and Chairman in 2015.

An Old Harrovian and former Harrow parent, Mr Odey (Druries 1972¹) is the founder of Odey Asset Management, which he established in 1991. Prior to founding Odey, Crispin managed the Baring European Growth Trust and Continental European Pension Funds at Barings Asset Management and Framlington Fund Managers. Crispin was appointed Deputy Chairman of Governors in September 2015 and is Chairman of the Investments Committee.

matthew fosh, MSI

An Old Harrovian and former Harrow parent, Matthew Fosh (The Head Master’s 1971²) has been the Group Chief Executive of Novae Group plc since joining in November 2002 and serves as a member of the Council of Lloyd’s. Matthew was previously a fund manager before co-founding his own company, Seagray Fosh Futures Limited in 1989. He was also an England Under-19 rugby and cricket international. Matthew is Chairman of the Harrow Development Trust.

Professor Graham Furniss, FBA OBE

Professor Furniss is former Pro-Director for Research and Enterprise at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He writes on African oral and written literatures, specialises in the Hausa language of West Africa and is Deputy Chair of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission as well as a past President of the African Studies Association of the UK. Professor Furniss chairs the British Academy’s Africa Panel and is a Trustee of the Britain-Nigeria Educational Trust. He has written five books and regularly contributes chapters to others, alongside published articles. Professor Furniss is the Masters’ Representative Governor.

The Hon. Robert Orr-Ewing 

An Old Harrovian, Mr Orr-Ewing (Elmfield 1967²) is the Head of the Leasehold Reform Department and Partner at Knight Frank LLP. He was a non-executive Director of HACAS Group plc and a Director of Eagle Star. Mr Orr-Ewing has been a barrister, proprietor of Property Letting Co, and Councillor for Kensington and Chelsea. Robert is the Estates Governor of John Lyon’s Charity.

susan whiddington, AB

A former Harrow parent, Mrs Whiddington is the founding Director of Mousetrap Theatre Projects, a theatre education charity dedicated to creating opportunities for disadvantaged young people to attend London theatre, supported by a range of education programmes. Susan is also an Advisory Board Member for Facing History and Ourselves, an organisation that trains teachers to engage students of diverse backgrounds in the examination of racism and prejudice. From 1989 to 1997, Mrs Whiddington was the Development Officer of the Society of London Theatre. She is also a past Chair of Democrats Abroad UK and was a delegate at the 1992 and 1996 US Democratic Conventions. She was formerly a Governor at the Canberra School in the Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.

Since September 2008, Susan has served as a Governor with responsibilities for Pastoral Care, Health & Safety and the Medical Centre. She is Chairman of the Grants Committee of John Lyon’s Charity.

George retired from the Royal Navy in 2016. As First Sea Lord, he was responsible for shaping the UK’s carrier, nuclear submarine and future frigate force. In his 36 year career, he served as a Navy pilot before commanding warships, the UK Amphibious Force, the UK Maritime Force, NATO 4* Maritime Command, and the UK Fleet. He has extensive operational experience and a wealth of knowledge in the ways of international defence and security. George now specialises in leadership and delivery of technical businesses that seek breakthrough performance, particularly in leading-edge technologies.

professor paul binski, FBA FSA

An Old Harrovian, Professor Binski (The Park 1970³) is Professor of History of Medieval Art in Cambridge University and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius. A Fellow of the British Academy, he writes about art and architecture, including medieval art, from a number of perspectives. He is a keen musician, having acquired the habits of painting and musicianship while a boy at Harrow. Paul is Cambridge University’s nominated Governor. 

Charles Stonehill

An Old Harrovian, Charles Stonehill (Newlands 1971²) is resident in New York in the United States where he is Founding Partner of Green & Blue Advisors, which assists companies investing in, developing and utilising renewable energy. He is also Vice Chairman of Julius Baer AG, a Zurich-headquartered private bank. He also serves as a Board member of Play Magnus, the Norwegian World Chess Champion Magus Carlsen’s app, software and media company. For almost 40 years, Charles has commuted between the United States and the United Kingdom in various senior positions in the investment banking industry.

Dr Isis Dove-Edwin, MD MRCP

 

A current parent, Isis trained in medicine at McGill University in Montreal. She spent a year as an Intern in Boston before returning to the UK to complete her specialist training at St Mary's Hospital in London. She undertook her postgraduate research at St Mark's Hospital and was appointed as a Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist in 2005. She has taken a career break from clinical medicine and is now a Magistrate, and non-executive Director of a start-up services and technology company specialising in socio-economic inclusion in Sub Saharan Africa. Isis was appointed Governor in 2011, she is a member of the General Purposes Committee and has oversight for Health and Safety and the Medical Centre and is Chairman of the Compliance Oversight Committee. She is also a member of the John Lyon’s Charity Grants Committee.

Giles Goodfellow QC, LLM 

An Old Harrovian and current Harrow parent, Mr Goodfellow  (Moretons 1974²) studied law at Cambridge University and Virginia Law School and worked as an attorney in Washington DC before returning to the English Bar where he specialises in tax law, particularly its contentious aspects. He has a keen interest in professional training and recruitment, and is a member of the General Purposes and Strategic Affairs Committees.

An Old Harrovian (The Grove 1982²) and current Harrow parent, Mark Stroyan is currently a Partner at Manchester Square Partners. The firm specialises in senior executive career advisory work and succession planning. Prior to Manchester Square Partners, Mark was UK and European Managing Partner and a Board Director of the global executive search firm Spencer Stuart. Mark graduated from St Andrews University and the College of Law and in his early career, he practiced law as a solicitor in the city. Mark is also Chairman of the Governors at Aysgarth Preparatory School.

Marina Brounger, LLB

A current parent, Marina is a former criminal barrister. She is an adviser to Churchill Heritage.  Marina was appointed Governor in 2014 and has oversight of Special Education Needs and Disabilities. She is also a member of the Bursaries and Selection Committees. 

She is the great-granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill.

Angus Goswell, MRICS

Mr Goswell is a current Harrow parent, a chartered surveyor and proprietary partner of Knight Frank LLP, based in the City of London. Previously, he ran his own City real estate business and was an International Director of Jones Lang LaSalle. He is Chairman of the Estates Committee.

The Hon. Andrew Butler

Mr Butler is an Old Harrovian (The Knoll 1981³) and a current Harrow parent. After completing a Classics degree at University College Oxford, he converted to law and is now a barrister practising at Tanfield Chambers in London, where he specialises in commercial and property law. He is on the board of the Harrow Association. A sports enthusiast, Andrew captained the School rugby and football teams during his school career and subsequently represented Oxford University at rugby. He is now President of the Old Harrovian Association Football Club and a qualified rugby referee. 

David EYTON, FREng FIoM3 FIOD

An Old Harrovian (Druries 1974³) and former parent, David studied engineering at Cambridge University and has worked for BP since graduating in 1982. He has held a number of Petroleum Engineering, Commercial and Business Management positions in locations around the world and is now the company’s Head of Technology. David sits on the UK Energy Technologies Institute and OGCI Climate Investments Boards and is a fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining and Institute of Directors.

david faber

David is the Headmaster of Summer Fields, Oxford, traditionally a feeder prep school to Harrow. Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, where he read Modern Languages, he began a career in politics after university and was subsequently the Member of Parliament for Westbury from 1992 to 2001; he held a number of posts during his political career, including Shadow Foreign Minister. He left politics to pursue a career as a writer and historian, and his work includes a biography of the Rt Hon Leo Amery (West Acre 1887). He is a longstanding member of the MCC Committee and is currently Chairman of the club’s Arts and Library Committee.

Richard winter, CBE FCA

Richard is an old Harrovian (Moretons 1976³) and is a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. He is a member of the Council of Wycombe Abbey School, a Trustee of International Rescue Committee UK and the Humanitarian Leadership Academy. Until recently he was a Trustee and the treasurer of Save the Children and Chair of Medical Emergency Relief International (Merlin).

Adam hart, FRSA

An Old Harrovian and current Harrow parent (West Acre 1977¹), Adam is a partner in London Bridge Capital Partners, an independent corporate finance firm that focuses on growth companies.  Adam holds a law degree and is a chartered accountant.  He is Chairman of the Harrow Association, where he has been a board member since 2009.  He has held senior positions in various City financial services firms, is past Chairman of the London Stock Exchange’s AIM Advisory Group and is a director of a number of companies. 

Claire Oulton MA, PGCE

Claire Oulton was Headmistress of St Catherine’s Bramley 1994-2000 and Head of Benenden 2000-2013 during which time she assisted with the setting up of an Academy. She stepped down after 20 years of headship and is now Head of Leadership Appointments for RSAcademics, assisting governors with the appointments of CEOS, Principals and Heads across the UK and internationally. She is also an in-house education advisor for a private investment firm and sits on the Board of an education technology company. She has sat on the governing body of 9 schools across the independent and maintained sectors.

An Old Harrovian and current parent, Mr Glover (Rendalls 783) is the Deputy Chairman of CSM Sport & Entertainment. Having set up his own business in the early 1990s, he has gone on to oversee significant growth in this fast moving and dynamic industry with CSM now established in over 20 International markets.

John Dunston was Head of two independent schools: Sibford 1990-1996, and Leighton Park 1996-2010. He is a former Chairman of the Society of Heads. He has been Chairman of Governors of two GSA schools and a Governor of three other schools. John leads consultancies on school governance, leadership and management in the UK and around the world. He advises Governors on the appointment of Heads as Senior Advisor for RSAcademics and acts as mentor for new Heads in independent and maintained schools. John is an OL; Governor of The John Lyon School since 2007 and Deputy Chairman of Governors from 2017; former Chair of the Education Committee; member of the Strategy Committee; Chair of the Finance and General Purposes Committee; and a Foundation Governor.
